|Carla DeSantis, Safety Director
Carla DeSantis is currently the Safety Director for two local utility companies – Akron Energy Systems and Cleveland Thermal. Both companies generate and distribute steam and chilled water to downtown locations for use in heating, air conditioning, and electrical power generation. She is responsible for the safety and health of the 100+ workers at four generating plants as well as two teams of distribution street workers. Carla has been working exclusively in the field of occupational safety and health for the past eight years. She possesses a Bachelor’s degree in psychology, a Master of Arts degree in organization development, and a Master of Science in occupational safety and health.Previously, Carla worked as an occupational safety and health consultant with a variety of employers in both the manufacturing and construction industries. She assisted employers in implementing the BWC’s 10 Step Business Plan for Safety and developed effective safety and health processes for each unique organization, including OSHA compliance guidance, safety and health training, and management support.She began her career in occupational safety at General Electric Consumer and Industrial Products as a Safety Coordinator where she was active in all aspects of the facility’s environmental, safety and health program and acted as a liaison between plant management and the union membership, developing culture change strategies and overseeing the work of seven independent safety committees. She introduced and managed Operation Prevention, a peer counseling program aimed at reducing at-risk behavior and preventing injuries in the workplace.
